About the group
The Gardening Group meets every first Tuesday of the month with the exception of January and August when no meetings take place. Meeting are usually about 2 hrs in length with tea & biscuits and a raffle.
We plan a programme of events which starts in February every year. A copy is available if requested from the co-ordinator.
Indoor meetings take place during the cooler months at the beginning end of the year. We may have a visiting speaker or other discussion session in the hall, such as plant identification, pot luck, spring bulbs, question & answer sessions etc. We sometimes have seasonal practical demonstrations – planting a spring container, using greenery from the garden at Christmas etc.
Last year the group had 2 visiting speakers. The first on garden design and then the Head Gardener from Woburn Abbey gardens. We then followed up with a visit to the Abbey gardens in the summer. We also visited Broughton Grange, Preston Bissett Nursery and 2 member’s gardens. We had planned a visit to Rousham Garden but unfortunately the weather intervened. (Now re-scheduled for 2018). In the hall; an interesting plant identification session and DVD on National Trust Gardens proved to be lively and informative meetings.
2018 promises to be equally as interesting with visiting speakers talking about garden birds, gardening in Canada, year round container gardening and making the most of bulbs. Visits include Stoke Park Pavilions, Rousham (weather permitting), Manor Farm Herbs and Nicholson Nurseries.
During the summer months we get out and about visiting gardens. These may be from stately homes to the gardens of our members. Small or large it doesn’t matter, there’s always something different to see and new ideas to take home. We visit local nurseries or garden centres for talks ranging from pruning to allotments or any other subject our members want to learn about. Visits are usually followed by tea and cake, an essential end to any outing!
December is party time and we look forward to our usual get together, lots of delicious food, secret Santa and surprise entertainment.
