About the group
Our group currently has ten members, meeting on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month in each other’s homes. We all have a previous knowledge of German and are also fortunate enough to have two native German speakers in our group. The focus for each session is chosen by the host, so we always have an interesting mix of activities – e.g. reading German short stories, poems, internet/newspaper articles, general conversation and discussion, crosswords, translating – in fact anything German-language related. In addition, we have just started reading together: ‘Meine freie deutsche Jugend’ by Claudia Rusch, which is a collection of short stories about the author’s experiences of growing up in the German Democratic Republic in the 1970s and 80s and her life after Wiedervereinigung.
Recently we were involved in a project to provide a German language guide for German-speaking visitors to the Old Gaol. This was a rewarding and interesting project for all involved. We also organise outings from time to time, most recently having had lunch at Vibin’s, where we sampled their excellent Rösti amongst other things. Superlecker!
